Open Thread

Here's some John McCain cringe-worthy YouTube goodness for your viewing pleasure. I dare you to watch it without averting your eyes. It's really really painful because, well, this role seems to come so naturally to McCain. You sort of think, wow, he is way too comfortable playing a young blond woman's creepy old guy stalker husband.

Anything else going on today?

Saw this (none / 0)

on the Great Orange Satan this morning.  I thought it was funny, but it generated some blowback later in the day.

Re: Saw this (none / 0)

More that a lot of people thought that the video was, well, funny, (to be fair, it is) and that it could actually help mccain out with certain groups, like young voters.

Todd (2.00 / 2)

did you really need to go there, we have a clear majority who agree with us on policies, while it isn't as bad as saying has Alzheimer's Disease, it is below the belt.

Do we really need to do that when Obama is winning by a large margin...

Re: Todd (none / 0)

I don't even think it's damaging, really, or a low blow. I think it's pretty humorous... and I detest McSame.

He did it to himself anyway, just like Rudy wearing drag on SNL.

It's better. It was Ben Smith from Politico that tipped off Pueblo County police, who then called the FBI.

Now THAT's the real McCain. (2.00 / 2)

Matthews said, "He can't read a teleprompter, but he can do that?"

It's because it was the one time he wasn't acting.

Only in Australia... (none / 0)

As we consider, with hindsight, the impact of the 'post-9/11 world' on our society it may be worth a look at one of the ways Australia chose to deal with it.  Warning: About as politically incorrect as it gets.

Mark 'Chopper' Reid, parodied in this sketch, is a real person who became infamous after serving time for murder and writing his 'not for the faint-hearted' autobiography.

Disclaimer: This was actually broadcast on network television in Oz.  I loved it.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

That was scary and yet he didn't seem like he was acting. Thank you Todd for reminding us why Senator McCain is the enemy.

You know, I've never understood... (2.00 / 1)

why people say "it didn't seem like he was acting."  I mean, no shit...the whole point of acting is to not seem like you're acting.  If you do seem like you're acting, you're doing it wrong!

Yes, John McCain is having fun with his role.  And why not?  A lot of actors will tell you that creepy or evil roles are the most fun to play, because you get to do things you would never dream of or dare to in real life.  Does anybody here seriously believe that, say, Anthony Perkins (who played Norman Bates in "Psycho") was a psychotic killer with mommy issues in real life just because he played one really well on the big screen?

This clip is a particularly dumb non-issue.  Let's focus on the real issues with John McCain's candidacy, please...there are certainly enough of them.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were no rhetorical questions?

You ought to see the whole thing (none / 0)

I remember than SNL episode.  McCain was the "host".  Usually, non-showbiz celebrities hosting SNL get by with one or two roles in the skits, often playing more-or-less themselves.  Not John McCain.  He was in about five skits, playing a variety of characters (drunken Irish poet was my personal favorite), and doing them extremely well.  Although I disliked McCain the politician even back then, I was impressed with McCain the actor.

One way to look at this is that John McCain missed his calling by going to Washington instead of to Hollywood after recovering from Vietnam.  He is a better actor than Ronald Regan was.

The other way to look at it is that a talent for acting is a doubtful quality in a man running for president as a "straight talker".  If you know that a man can fake sincerity, how much can you really trust him?

first of all out of context... (none / 0)

secondly: acting.

The one part of liberalism that I find abhorrent is the absolute lack of a sense of humor.

That was actually alright, pretty funny, especially for a non actor.

We lose the ability to call BS on the right when they can't recognize satire and fiction if we too do the same.

Can't have it both ways.

McCain's ethos is tired and old and he is wrong for the country, we don't need to hit him on this banal SNL stuff. (which again, at least elicited a chuckle from me)

This is leaning toward Daily Kos territory folks. Comments about McCain being old, having bad teeth or being creepy-- lets not go there please.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

Remember when Jerome was mentioning the McCain web ad about Obama willing to meet with foreign leaders?  Yeah, that might just backfire on McCain and not have the negative impact Jerome was predicting.  From a  recent ABC poll, 77% said the US should be willing to meet leaders, while 22% support the flawed McCain/Bush and conventional thinking fail policy of the past.

Looks like conventional wisdom from 2000 and 2004 continues to not apply in 2008.
